Understanding physical and chemical phenomena emerging at surfaces and interfaces of matter is a key to solve problems in the field of energy technology. Designing and controlling the surface structures are essential to improve performance of solar and fuel cells. Therefore, we investigate various interfacial phenomena using surface models controlled at the atomic and molecular level. Our aim is to improve the conversion efficiency between electrical and chemical energy by optimizing interfacial charge transfer, and to create surfaces with novel functions by controlling surface structures. Moreover, we develop novel spectroscopic methods to get deeper insights into interfacial phenomena.
