Introduction
Michael Lewis is a professor in the School of Computing and Information at the University of Pittsburgh, USA. His research focuses on human interaction with intelligent automation, which is required for the sustainable human society that must be supported by IoT.
From his dissertation research in modeling human operators at Georgia Tech to the present, Dr. Lewis has sought to develop visualization-based control interfaces, human-agent teamwork, and most recently human-robot interaction. His research group in U. Pitts has developed a number of widely used research tools including USARSim, a robotic simulation adopted for RoboCup competition which was downloaded from SourceForge more than 75,000 times, and CaveUT software for inexpensive immersive displays. One of Lewis-lab’s ongoing projects is to develop both normative models of performance based on proper calibration of trust and adaptive models by which autonomous systems can use indices of human trust to adapt their characteristics to improve performance of the overall system. While this would be challenging for a single robot, Dr Lewis’s team is working with very large (1,000+) swarms in CUDA-based simulations and a small swarm of 10 Turtlebots in the lab. He published more than 250 scientific papers in the area of Human Factors research. Because of his research achievements and knowledge, he is a lifetime member of the IEEE, a emeritus member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, and a member of the ACM.
